www.thecurb.com.au/the-bouncer-review/The Bouncer Review 4 out of 5 stars Travis Akbar April 9, 2019 Reviews Aside from Van Damme’s acting, the rest of the film is also pretty good. Helmer Julien Leclercq does a great job at keeping it dark and gritty, allowing the story to flow quite nicely. The actions scenes, although there aren’t a huge amount of them, are also good. They are well placed throughout the film and keep the pacing well set. The ending is also great and unexpected, it’s almost in the same vein of The Wrester (an ironic reference as that film was Mickey Rourke’s rebirth, with Rourke also worked with Van Damme in Double Team).
If JCVD was JCVD’s second chance, then The Bouncer is the action stars third coming.

www.easternfilmfans.co.uk/the-bouncer-aka-lukas-review/ The Bouncer aka Lukas Review By econdor April 11, 2019 Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Van Damme with his precise, clean lines, his awareness of physical space, of positioning and of grace, was always a sculptural object (often objectified, and sometimes having a laugh). The older Van Damme raises this perception, whittling out his form, imbuing the image with a sharp stillness and adds those weathered deep alleys and lines of his cinematic face.
Lukas might be a small, maybe even uneventful movie but it's also a controlled and nuanced resounding success, Van Damme is coming home.

Lukas - 10/10 (Italian dvd)
I watched it twice! Another 2018 Top film from JCVD and a gem in his filmography. The thing that I appreciated most is originality, it is not a predictable film with the usual action story already seen tons of times but a realistic, original and convincing noir story. The director has spread action in some well-filmed scenes, always with style and visually beautiful. I was very impressed by the acting of Sveva Alviti, a really good acting performance. JC did a great job, he played the role of a bouncer perfectly, he was a good boxer and not a kicker this time. The chemistry between JC and the young daughter was very good, JC doesn't talk much in this film, he shows some emotion only with Sveva.
The film is short, just 80 minutes but does not feel rushed, they could have given a few more minutes to the relationship between JC and his daughter but probably the director thought that it would not fit the dark tone of the film. I really liked the scenes filmed from the back and the cool use of music during action scenes. The final twist was really great and I'd like to talk about the final scene but I don't want to spoil the ending but pay attention to how the film ends, don't turn the face until the last second.
I would like to see a new JCVD French film directed by Julien Leclercq, he has shown very well that he knows how to manage JC's charisma.

voicesfromthebalcony.com/2019/04/26/the-bouncer-2018-review/ The Bouncer is apparently different from the original version of the film that was released in Europe last year as Lukas. It’s had some scenes trimmed and is dubbed into English. The original version was mostly in French with some Flemish, (it’s set in Belgium) and English with everything subtitled.
Those looking for a typical Van Damme film will be either surprised or disappointed by The Bouncer. Those looking for a gritty crime film should have a good time though.

setthetape.com/2019/05/08/the-bouncer-review/ The Bouncer – Review By Dominic Hastings 8 May 2019 4 out of 5 stars When admiring Van Damme’s performance in The Bouncer, and observing the film in general, it is remarkable that he has been living within the realm of direct-to-video (minus the odd exception) for over 20 years now. JCVD should have relaunched Van Damme back into the mainstream, but the only payoffs in the subsequent years were direct-to-video Universal Soldier sequels, the Coors Light ads, and a villainous role in The Expendables 2. Hopefully, The Bouncer will have a good exposure on both the home video market and VOD. The truth is that The Bouncer exceeds the generic expectations and quality often displayed in direct-to-video cinema, and is more than worthy of a duration on the big screen. This should/could be Jean-Claude Van Damme’s comeback.
