Fantastic Fest Review: THE BOUNCER Proves (Again) That JCVD Is Still The Best The aging acting star once again shows off his dramatic chops. By Evan Saathoff •Sep. 24, 2018 • Though modest and bare, The Bouncer is still more than just an average DTV action film. Director Julien Leclercq makes choices that clearly indicate thoughtfulness and care in everything from cinematography and music to fight choreography. The fact that it’s (mostly) not an English language film also lends it automatic heightened status alongside entries such as JCVD.Read full review here: birthmoviesdeath.com/2018/09/24/fantastic-fest-review-the-bouncer-proves-again-that-jcvd-is-still-the-best

I usually don't pay much attention to what critics say but I noticed that it got almost all positive reviews so far, maybe there are chances for a limited theatrical release in US at this point. It would be nice!

The Bouncer
Van Damme still has it! By Lutz Granert
In doing so, Van Damme not only distributes punches and kicks, but also acts seriously, if you let him. He proved that in the self-referential meta-action thriller "JCVD" around 2008, in which he unexpectedly and openly accounts for his excessive life. The French thriller "The Bouncer" by genre director Julien Leclercq ("The Assault") picks up on this very spot and gives Van Damme - also off the action - a lot of space to fill his broken figure with life and suffering. A calculation that goes up: Van Damme delivers an appealing performance, only the simple plot lets the emphatically gloomy movie from time to time down.
[..]
Conclusion: "The Bouncer" is a rock-solid thriller, although suffering from some script weaknesses, but it has Jean-Claude Van Damme, who hasn't been this good in a long time. At least for JCVD fans also an absolute must see!

We should get German reviews from fans in the next days because the film will be already out there on VOD at the end of November. Hopefully it won't get "leaked" and put online by some jerk.

The latest movie by Jean-Claude Van Damme, "The Bouncer" (2018), is highly recommended. Produced in Belgium. Nothing to do with the movies he has done in the last 30 years. 👌 I watched jcvd's latest movie #TheBouncer. We are far from what he served us in his youth, very far. 😁 beautiful film, beautiful story, beautiful lesson.

Lukas will not be the big comeback of Jean-Claude Van Damme because even if his performance is honorable and his character is installed in a heavy atmosphere through sequences, the film gives an impression of déjà-vu.

www.takt-magazin.de/magazin/the-bouncer-jean-claude-van-damme-vandamme-dvd-film-kritik_290402Jean-Claude Van Damme schlägt zurück – „The Bouncer“ in der t.akt-Kritik Geschrieben von Lutz Granert 3. Dezember 2018 Translation by Google: Actionstar returns to its old strength
In all dangerous missions of Lukas, the action scenes in "The Bouncer" are not in the foreground. Director Julien Leclercq lies with a spin on original locations and the renunciation of Effektbrimborium very much to a realistic milieu drawing, whereby he is not immune to half-baked dramaturgy clichés about a femme fatale or kidnapped child as a means of pressure. Despite this, the subliminal thriller "The Bouncer" offers a captivating basic tension - and scores with the convincing portrayal of Jean-Claude Van Damme.

www.eklecty-city.fr/cinema/lukas-un-polar-sincere-et-touchant/ Lukas, un polar sincère et touchant Par François - 11 décembre 2018 Lukas, a sincere and touching thriller[..] Lukas is not a major film of Van Damme's career, on the other hand, he buries many of his previous productions in films shot for modest sums. He does not renew the genre either, nor revolutionizes it.
However, we note that some directors continue to believe in the Belgian actor. With good directors, the latter is much better used. His charisma remains intact, even the age improves it.
A minimalist and effective thriller, which will please fans of JCVD.

Beautiful performance of jcvd in #Lukas. Good idea #JulienLeclercq made the choice to put Van Damme in a thriller, a new genre that suits him perfectly I think. #JCVD #JeanClaudeVanDamme It is quite dismaying LUKAS. Van Damme has a fucking presence and the real never uses it. The other actors are all more terrible than the others (there is the double of Grégoire Ludig with braids). And the script is a festival of the most tired clichés. Lukas 2018 Watch Full Jean-Claude Van Damme, who lifted the dust of vision shelves like wine, offers a great action cinema to the movie lovers with his movie that is ready to explode. From the heart of Belgium to Hollywood, jcvd made a return to his homeland with a tight thriller. Although it's not something new to the genre, it's better than the boring video films he did in recent years. #Lukas aka #TheBouncer

One of the most beautiful and very beautiful films 💙💙💙
#Lukas is the best I've seen of #VanDamme in recent times. The Belgian is fantastic giving life to a disco doorkeeper, very burned, and father of a girl, who after an accident will have to collaborate with the police, infiltrating a criminal organization.

Have had the pleasure of knowing Jean-Claude Van Damme for over 30 years, we met for the first time in Cannon Films office in Wardour Street in London and he was amazed i knew who he was from a little movie named NO RETREAT NO SURRENDER, way before BLOODSPORT came out. Over the years i've interviewed him many many many times in various parts of the world, we've worked together on a couple of projects and a solid friendship has developed over the years, we may not always see eye to eye on everything and he did get so annoyed with me that he killed me at least once in a movie!
i am very proud to be able to call him a friend, and having just seen him give an award worthy performance in Julien Leclercq's LUKAS/ THE BOUNCER after spending the last few weeks getting an inside view of the re-edit and rebuilding of his very personal project FULL LOVE formerly known as THE EAGLE PATH and SOLDIERS, i have to say he is the dude! A seriously under-rated actor who gives a brutally honest and non flashy performance in LUKAS that delivers on so many levels , the acting, the action, ther whole package. No he's not letting loose with the combos of NRNS, or dropping into the splits ala BLOODSPORT or doing the KICKBOXER dance, but he gives one of his very best performances in this film and it seriously deserves a lot more attention.
Much respect to Julien LeClercq and his team for putting this movie together, and once again much respect to JCVD for taking on this challenge...no go and buy the Blu-Ray and/or the DVD! Or even better pester the distributor to give it at least a limited theatrical release in your country! This is a JCVD level performance but in an action thriller

www.ilcineocchio.it/cinema/lukas-the-bouncer-recensione-film-jean-claude-van-damme/Still no release date for Italy but the first critic reviews are popping up and they agree with the general idea that the film is a good noir with a slow pacing, few dialogues and a dark atmosphere. Everyone say that JC should keep doing this type of productions and maybe this explain why JC's career is in pause right now, JC is probably waiting for a new French offer before considering starring on American films again.
