The moments of self-analysing are also often well observed and well performed by Van Damme, who puts in 110%, relishing the chance to both make fun of himself and to revitalise his career, all the while making some moments of reflection genuinely affecting. The show also has lashing of darkness which helps the proceedings feel dangerous, even as it gets more and more ridiculous.Read more: www.thehollywoodnews.com/2017/12/07/jean-claude-van-johnson-review-2/#lrAZI4l8h8v505M3.99

www.nytimes.com/2017/12/14/arts/television/jean-claude-van-johnson-review-amazon.html?partner=rss&emc=rssReview: In ‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson,’ Van Damme Gives Us the True Hollywood Story via NYTimes Arts By MIKE HALEDEC. 14, 2017 “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” is fine, if ultimately unfulfilling, as a three-hour binge, and Mr. Van Damme, who turned 57 in October, is still in fighting shape. It’s in a subgenre where the quality is rising, though, with Keanu Reeves’s kabuki version of himself in the “John Wick” movies and Christopher Meloni’s genius self-parody in Syfy’s “Happy!” Mr. Van Damme needs to kick a little higher.

www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2017/12/jean-claude-van-johnson-van-damme-amazon-review.htmlJean-Claude Van Damme Deserves Better Than Jean-Claude Van Johnson By Jacob Oller | December 14, 2017 | 2:00pm Long stretches of the series are neither funny like a satire should be, nor interesting enough on their own terms as a spy plot—though the narrative at least implements inter-episode time jumps that feel suitably spy-like and cut out the logistical boredom that can seep its way into even the silliest of spy-adjacent stories (think the later Fast and Furious films). It’s unfortunate, since the series’ namesake always entertains. Whether JCVD is failing to drop into his iconic splits or using his wrinkled scowl to impart maximum sadness, he’s matured into a wonderfully understated comic actor, a weathered meathead somewhere between James Bond and Leslie Nielsen’s WD-40 Dick Steele. He deserves far more focused work than Jean-Claude Van Johnson is willing to give him.

edition.cnn.com/2017/12/13/entertainment/jean-claude-van-johnson-review/index.htmlJean-Claude Van Damme gets kicks in Amazon series Brian Lowry
By Brian Lowry, CNN December 13, 2017
Those gags, though, quickly begin to run dry, and even at a mere six half-hour episodes, get stretched beyond even Van Damme's legendary limberness. Ultimately, there's only so much mileage to be gleaned from listening to the aging star grouse about the fact that "Looper" basically stole the plot from his earlier movie, "Timecop."
"I should never have come back," Van Damme/Van Johnson mutters at one point, the kind of line that can make a critic's job a little too easy.
To be fair, the idea underlying the show isn't a bad one. It's just in the execution where it would help if the star really could turn back time.

www.fortressofsolitude.co.za/tv/jean-claude-van-johnson-season-1-review/Jean-Claude Van Johnson Season 1 Review – Van Damme’s Best Work Written by Jarrod Saunders Creator, writer, and executive producer Dave Callaham, who helped put together The Expendables films, clearly has a knack for creating these homage films. It’s easy to tell that he genuinely appreciates the actor’s work. Anyone who grew up in the ’90s will enjoy it. It’s a really fun ode to the actor’s career.
If Jean-Claude Van Johnson achieves nothing else, it’s proven that Van Damme has a lot more to offer than just playing bulky cardboard cutout characters. Welcome back, JCVD!

Just watched the whole season on Amazon prime video, so these are my "hot" first impressions.
Jean Claude Van Johnson - 9/10
I loved it but the ending wasn't that great to deserve the 10/10 rating. I prefer to split the show by each episode.
Episode 1 was an homage to a legendary icon and had a long great fight scene, the only episode I really felt the comedy in some lines.
Episode 2 was the most drama of the show, good acting but it's the episode I liked least. Not much action but it served to have familiarity with the characters.
Episode 3 and 4 were the real deal of the show! great acting with an awesome "Philip" and JC, great action, great fight scenes, a truly homage to Timecop, Double Impact and Bloodsport.
Episode 5 and 6 were mostly about the spy "Johnson", Kat Foster showed that she can actually fight but the ending felt a bit rushed.
JCVD did an amazing job. Kat Foster is a really lovely actress and Peter Atencio is a really good director, no scene was poorly directed. After this I really feel the need to re-watch "Timecop".
A big THANK YOU to Amazon to make this happening. Looking forward to season 2. I'll post more specific comments when I re-watch the series in the next days.

www.bulletproofaction.com/2017/12/15/the-checklist-jean-claude-van-johnson-season-1/Final Score = 5/5 (100%) I will echo my thoughts from when I first reviewed the Jean-Claude Van Johnson pilot… If you are a fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme and are not an Amazon Prime subscriber, THIS is the excuse you have been waiting for to become one. Jean-Claude Van Johnson is the real deal and as a fan of JCVD, I am thrilled that he is getting the opportunity to be in the spotlight once more and show how he has grown as a performer.
