By Rob Thomas [...] The writing is clever, and “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” was directed by Peter Atencio, who similarly mixed over-the-top action and broad comedy for Key & Peele in their 2016 movie “Keanu.” But the real draw here is, of course, Van Damme. At this stage of his career, he could have relaxed in his Hollywood mansion, maybe surfacing every once in a while to cash a check in an “Expendables” sequel.
But seeing him push himself into the unfamiliar territory of meta comedy, and being so good at it, is a real kick in the head.

I would like to see Bautista as a special guest in a episode of season 2. There would be some Tong Po jokes for the comedy part.

vodzilla.co/reviews/amazon-uk-tv-review-jean-claude-van-johnson/Amazon UK TV review: Jean-Claude Van Johnson Review Overview Van Damme 7Everything else 3 Rating 5 Ivan Radford | On 23, Dec 2017 Jean-Claude Van Damme plays himself in Jean-Claude Van Johnson, Amazon’s new action comedy series. That premise alone might immediately grab your attention, or it might turn you off, but there’s a twist to the self-aware show: this version of Can Damme doesn’t just ponder his existence or make insider jokes about Hollywood; he’s also a hit man in his spare time.
We catch up with Johnson (his code name), as Van Damme’s career has reached a dead end. He’s washed-up, can’t remember his lines and even the style of fighting has changed from his unrealistic one-man-at-a-time duels to full-on brawls. Splits are out. And not just because he can’t do them anymore.[..] On the basis of this, Jean-Claude Van Damme has undoubtedly still got it. What a shame, then, that this fails to do justice to the man’s obvious talent and apparent sense of humour. Van Damme is amazing, and amazingly up for it; Jean-Claude Van Johnson just needs to decide what “it” is.

‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson’ Review: Muscles From Brussels Is Strong In Satire by Dominic Patten December 13, 2017 4:46pm When the pilot for Jean-Claude Van Johnson first popped up on Amazon in August of last year, I have to admit I liked the Dave Callaham-created project, but I really didn’t think it could work as a series. Well, now that the six-episode first season of the series starring Jean-Claude Van Damme is set for a December 15 launch, it’s time for me to admit I was so wrong on that one.Read more here: deadline.com/2017/12/jean-claude-van-johnson-review-jean-claude-van-damme-phylicia-rashad-amazon-video-1202226384/

‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson’ Is The Perfect Post-Holiday Binge By Brett White @brettwhite |Dec 27, 2017 at 11:00am Not only will Jean-Claude Van Johnson please the members of your family with warm nostalgia for ’80s action, it will win over the younger generation with it’s off-kilter sense of humor. And the whole thing will be done by the time it’s time to put on real pants and head out and put those Chili’s gift cards to work. So get your loved ones to turn off their screens and focus up, because now’s the time to stream the splits!Read more: decider.com/2017/12/27/jean-claude-van-johnson-holiday-binge/?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_source=DeciderTwitter&utm_medium=SocialFlow

www.chattanoogapulse.com/screen/reviews/the-self-awareness-of-jean-claude-van-damme/The Self-Awareness Of Jean Claude Van Damme by John DeVore December 27, 2017 The show works well due to its limited episode number. Six episodes feels like the right amount to explore the idea. Any more and the joke would wear thin. This doesn’t necessarily bode well for future seasons, though. If the writers want to continue the series, they will need to move beyond the more obvious jokes. Van Damme could reasonably sell another season, but he’d need a stronger supporting cast and maybe cameo or two from the old days, but without turning the show into a smaller scale version of The Expendables. Jean-Claude Van Johnson is worth a short binge on the weekend, particularly if you were a fan of his earlier work.

Jean-Claude Van Johnson Whiffs on Hollywood Satire
By Matt Zoller Seitz
Jean-Claude Van Damme is in the series Jean-Claude Van Johnson, and he’s good in it. But the true star of this series is Van Damme’s face. It’s magnificent, and you can tell that creator Dave Callaham and director Peter Atencio know it magnificent, too, because they never pass up an opportunity to examine it in close-up. You just don’t see faces like this anymore, at least not in English language cinema: 57-year-old faces that look 57, with eye bags and crags and pockmarks that create a rumpled frame for an actor’s seen-it-all eyes. I have no idea whether Van Damme has never had work done, or if he had some once but the years defeated it anyway. Either way, it doesn’t matter. He has a great face and he uses it well, mainly by doing as little with it as possible — just sort of looking around and listening. I could turn the sound off and just stare at it.

My rating for the full series would be 7/10.
I loved the pilot more than the rest of the series with the exception of episode NR. 3 which I thought was amazing. I don't like what they did with the story. I would have preferred a more 'realistic' story and what happened to the Christmas cards from Dolph Lundgren? Why did we never get to see that side of the story? I remember reading a plot for the pilot/series in which they said that JC was sad about receiving Christmas cards from Dolph and his family because it made JC realize he was lonely.
I still have a lot of questions like: Why did we never get to see Brown? Did Filip die instead of the Time Policeman like JC suggests, if so, how is that possible? Which time-line was the Time Policeman from? If the girl in the last scene is Jane, why is she a child and the others are not?

Jean-Claude Van Johnson Is The Hero The World Needs 5/31/2018 By Dave B. Jean-Claude Van Johnson hit all of the right notes for me. It’s stupid funny, yet endearing. It doesn’t take itself at all seriously , but it addresses some serious issues in a respectful way. And with six 30-minute episodes, it’s the perfect length to binge watch in a day and still have time to do other things. It helps that Van Damme is a likable character who experiences personal growth throughout the show. And the fact that his movies were a major feature of my childhood definitely predisposed me to stick with the show beyond its marginal first episode. Combined with the inclusion of Phylicia Rashad as an integral character, there was little chance that I wouldn’t like this show. [..] As I‘ve hopefully made clear, I really liked this show, so if you’ve ever read any of my television reviews, you probably can guess what I’ll say next: Jean-Claude Van Johnson was cancelled after only one season so there won’t be any new episodes. Despite that, the show is definitely worth checking out, particularly for fans of Van Damme and 1980s and 90s action movies. Rating: 7.5/10 Read full review here: nothingtosayhere.com/2/post/2018/05/jean-claude-van-johnson-is-the-hero-the-world-needs.html

I'm going to re-watch the whole season soon. I will give my final rating after that.
