Sheldon Lettich confirmed in an interview (May 25, 2018) that the sequel is not happening. ultimateactionmovies.com/interview-sheldon-lettich-on-bloodsport-van-damme-and-stallone UAMC: Lionheart (AWOL) is about to get a sequel. How was working on that film different from some of Van Damme’s other projects? Sheldon: First of all, Van Damme told me just a few weeks ago that the sequel is not happening. What was different about “Lionheart” was that we tried to structure it so that it did not follow the usual template for action movies which were being made at that time. For example, Lyon doesn’t track down and wreak vengeance on the guys who killed his brother at the beginning of the film. And then his nemesis for the final fight is someone neither he nor the audience has met before. There’s no personal tie-in to anything that transpired earlier. Attila is not one the guys who killed his brother; he had nothing to do with it whatsoever. That was a pretty radical departure from the storylines that the typical action movies were following in the 80’s and 90’s. “Lionheart” broke some cardinal rules, and yet it still worked; audiences still loved it, and they still love it today.

With the Cannes announce it was clear that the project was cancelled regarding JC and without him I hope it won't happen. Kickboxer is a martial arts franchise that can suit a new star but Lionheart no, most of the charm was based on JC and without him it would not work fo me, they already tried with Tatum's film "Fighting", even though it was kind of good, they failed to get the emotional feel of "Lionheart" and it was just a fighting film like the title suggested, few chances a new low budget version starring a nobody can do better than "Fighting".

JCVD (or the JCVD team) should be more careful with those movies announcements. In February they say "I will be there as well to talk about Lionheart 2, which we will start filming at the end of this year." That sounds like they have solid plans to shoot it, not like the movies 3C and X2 he was promoting at Cannes, which are obviously still up in the air. I was never excited about this Lionheart sequel, but there are a lot of people who wanted this to happen. Jean-Claude Van Damme Reveals He’s Making ‘Lionheart 2’ This Year By Paul Heath - Feb 28, 2018 Jean-Clade Van Damme has confirmed that he is set to hit the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France this year to promote a few different projects. In a recent Instagram post, the action star revealed that he will hit the famous croisette to launch his new movie The Bouncer and also a film called Blood and Land.
The interesting news here though is that he has also revealed that he will start work on Lionheart 2, the sequel to his 1990 film Lionheart (above), which saw him play a French soldier who begins participating in underground street fights in order to make money for his brother’s family. If the name isn’t too familiar, it was released as A.W.O.L. in the UK, so your lack of knoweledge of its Stateside name is forgivable.Read more here: www.thehollywoodnews.com/2018/02/28/jean-clade-van-damme-reveals-hes-making-lionheart-2-year/#Y4d0UgYCKjrVZuIX.99 ----------------------------- cityonfire.com/jean-claude-van-damme-teases-sequels-lionheart-2-the-quest-2-and-many-more/
Update: JCVD has announced on FB: “Hi friends! This year I’ll be at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in France, to present my new movie The Bouncer and also a movie called Blood and Land. I will be there as well to talk about Lionheart 2, which we will start filming at the end of this year and to promote Full Love, which will be presented at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival! Be prepared for more surprises soon!”

Usually film news shouldn't never going public until a director is officially attached but in the social media era it's difficult to hide all the rumors. Probably JC was kind of sure but in this business productions can be cancelled even 2 weeks before the start, let alone months before that.

Yeah, I think a new Lionheart movie is better to not be announced until a crew and cast is certain, and investors in it.

I think this project will have the same fate as the Bloodsport sequel, I remember all the talking about it but at the end nothing happened.

So now it might still happen? The video makes it seem like they came up with the idea of Lionheart 2 on the spot, it kind of sounds like they are joking, but Lionheart 2 was announced back in January 2018. JCVD says in the video that it will take Sheldon 6 months to a year to write the script. It's all very strange. You would assume the script would be finished or almost finished by the time they announced it in January. And why did Sheldon say it's not happening and now it might? Maybe they are just joking around during the after party?
