Jean-Claude Van Damme: "I like wildlife documentaries"

By Marc Ducharlier
On the occasion of the broadcast of the second part of "Expendables", the Belgian actor gives us his vision of television. You may be surprised!
First of all, are you a big TV consumer?
To be honest, no. For an obvious reason: lack of time. Sometimes I like to watch a good movie or big sport events, such as the Football World Cup, but also wildlife documentaries. In reality, I'm more often on a tablet to watch karate, boxing ... I'm not a big zapper. When I watch a program, I keep watching it.
As a child, what were you watching on TV?
Like everyone, cartoons. I never missed Walt Disney, which I devoured with wondering eyes. Very quickly, my parents took me to the movie theater. And that's when I discovered a classic: "Gone with the wind", Victor Fleming, with Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, but also "Ben-Hur", with Charlton Heston. Later, I grew up with the films of Bruce Lee, Steve McQueen and Jean-Paul Belmondo.
It sounds like you only like action movies?
Think again. I love as much a love film as a comedy. Obviously, feature films have given me the desire to practice acting, even if one must be able to take on several roles in his career.
In your opinion, what is the mission of the small screen?
Entertain and travel, to inform and educate. This is the most important to me. Television is a great integration tool that can effectively take over from school and help our children. This media has an impressive impact on people. It is imperative to keep this mission of education and development of the general culture.
Is TV more violent today than before?
I rather want to tell you that the world is more violent in 2018 than twenty-five or even thirty years ago. TV is a kind of mirror. Those who do it are obviously involved. It's up to them to channel what's important to spread. If we want it to continue to exist and not be eaten by digital media, we must reinvent it, because the codes change very quickly nowadays.
Could you do without it?
No, because even if I do not look at it often, I have my little habits. Some do not have a TV and are doing very well. Others, on the other hand, have three positions at home and can no longer do without them.
Exactly, if you had any advice to give to the assiduous, what would it be?
None is their choice. On the other hand, let's be careful with children, who tend, today, to look at it too much. For some, it has even become their favorite pastime. There, I sound the alarm. Rather than sitting in front of reality shows, let them play sports!
"Expendables 2", tonight at 9 pm on TF 1.
