JCVD as the bad guy, but not the kind we have to hate.

6/10 film to me, JCVD is cool but the film overall is forgettable, similar to NRNS. I don't re-watch this film for maybe 6 years or more, last time must be when I bought the second dvd copy in 2010/11.

I've seen this movie once (in 2015) it was a 7/10 for me, would not mind a re-watch this year.

Jcvd is awsome as the villain but the movie is kinda slow going and sho kosugi is probably a very accomplished martial artist but doesn't put it across on camera like jcvd did in this one. All the same I go back and forth from this one on time to time but not as often as other movies

I agree with you, guys. The best part was Van Damme.

2.5/5 stars Blu-ray Review: “Black Eagle” Is A Silly Escapist Martial Arts Flick by Eamon Tracy March 23, 2018 “The action is clear and the restoration looks great. The Maltese backdrop is given full use of its beautiful old buildings and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea wrapped around the island.” The film is going for the Bond-like international espionage angle but it’s a bit campier (not counting Roger Moore’s turn). Kosugi is a bit silly dressing like a nerdy suburban dad to keep his cover and has his two sons joining him. He’s able to dispatch enemies in hand to hand combat with only a couple of maneuvers. I liked his fighting style albeit a bit stiff. The camerawork is pretty great and doesn’t have too many cuts. The action is clear and the restoration looks great. The Maltese backdrop is given full use of its beautiful old buildings and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea wrapped around the island.Read more here: irishfilmcritic.com/blu-ray-review-black-eagle-is-a-silly-escapist-martial-arts-flick/

www.thebigmoviehouse.com/2018/05/black-eagle.htmlBlack Eagle (MVD Rewind Collection) Blu-ray Review + Screenshots Jimmy P May 02, 2018 I have to give MVD credit where credit is due: they have given Black Eagle way more love than it deserves. When I got this blu-ray I was excited about the special features, but after watching them, I have realized that the money could have been better spent on another, more worthy film. Outside of the Sho Kosugi featurette, I found nothing else presented here particularly interesting. The making of Black Eagle featurette is the longest featurette here and gives us nothing that we would find fascinating. Usually there is something that happens on set that everyone wants to talk about, but here there are no such stories. The Tales of Jean-Claude Van Damme featurette should have been a bit exciting, but the stories are all the same: Van Damme wasn’t the monster that everyone says he was. The filming of Black Eagle, much like the film itself, is rather boring and uninteresting. I am sure that there are those out there that will find these features to be interesting, but I could not.

The Gratuitous B-Movie Column: Black Eagle January 2, 2019 | Posted by Bryan Kristopowitz Rating: 7.5/10 Black Eagle, directed by Eric Karson, is a shockingly low key, low stakes action flick. Despite having two real deal martial artists in starring roles and the promise of a major fight between them, not to mention the prospect of war between the two major superpowers (the United States and the Soviet Union), the plot never seems to rise above a minor international incident. Black Eagle is also more of a spy movie than an out and out action movie. That’s a strange strategy for a movie with Sho Kosugi, the ninja, and Jean-Claude Van Damme in it. @retromoviegeek just watched Black Eagle(1988)with Van Damme and Shô Kosugi on Prime. Not sure how I didn't know this movie existed being a lifelong martial arts fan. Actually was pretty good. Decent plot, great fight scenes, acting was so so, but you know that going in. 7.5/10

This was part of a boxset I watched yesterday. Maybe it was that I watched it last before I went to bed, but ... eh, I'm going to have to watch again to get the effect. Maybe it was the post-production. I don't know. The fight scene choreography was nice... but then I like choreography so maybe I'm biased.
