I read a couple of Jean-Claude Facebook posts about it, he would love to play Johnny Cage but I think the chances are not high because the new reboot was planned to be a trilogy or even more and all the actors chosen were young. The only character played by an old actor was Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) but I think he was chosen because they were looking for a famous Japanese actor.
So I expect a young actor to play Johnny Cage but if they eventually have trouble finding one I think JCVD would be a great choice but for now I'd rather not get too excited about it.

It was more of a joke on JCVD's part, I don't think he was serious about playing Johnny Cage. I mean he would still like to play a role like that, as in a character who is a very skilled martial artist.

In Van Damme's younger days he for sure could, but playing a Johnny Cage part just wouldn't work now unless Cage was a retired guy or something and came back to help the rest of the Mortal Kombat people or train them or something.... But otherwise it wouldn't work, Cage is a young cocky arrogant guy so they need someone like that like what Van Damme used to be...... But like I said, maybe they could do something where he is retired and comes back t help the rest of the cast or something like that.

It seems that they have chosen Karl Urban to play Johnny Cage, nothing wrong with the actor that I really like in "The Boys" but I have to point out that Hollywood has profoundly changed in the selection of actors, they are only looking for acting qualities. Van Damme would never make it today. Johnny Cage is a character based on a Hollywood star who is also an excellent martial artist and instead of casting Scott Adkins they go and hire Karl Urban who has no martial arts background and all the kicks will be done by stunt double but you know what he'll play his lines perfectly because now that's the only thing that matters nowadays, not the martial arts scenes in a martial arts movie...
