JCVD easily could have put a few more fight scenes in here. The movie opens with a 30 second fight scene and it nearly takes an hour and a half before you see the next one! I think it's due to the fact that they wanted to use as few doubles as possible. I realized that JC could not perform the action scenes as he once did during "Kill 'em All" and I do not think the situation has improved, JC always tries to give his best but now he is of a certain age and can't handle more than 2 or 3 fight scenes. I prefer to see less action than to see excessive use of stunt doubles. This is probably why "Headlock" will not be realized.

I think it because it's a French comedy that it's less fun for people outside of France (different kind of humor). I think it's a silly comedy like BEUR SUR LA VILLE, which I haven't seen but only the parts with JCVD and that just isn't my kind of comedy. Also, people mentioned that some jokes might have gotten lost in translation.
I did read some positive reviews by people who are not JCVD fans and who were pleasantly surprised. So mixed reviews. Overall people say JCVD did a good job, so he is not to blame.

I was expecting better reception to be honest but Netflix has never produced a "great movie" and this production is no exception, I miss the small production studios like Cannon who knew how to come up with excellent films for little money, JC would still be able to make great films if only he had the material and production talent.

This reminded me a bit of an Austin Powers type movie. Had its moments but overall fell short in the comedy department for me.

flixpatrol.com/title/the-last-mercenary/Guys, the reception was mixed but the movie is a HUGE WORLDWIDE SUCCESS !!! First or second position in most countries, 1 in France, Germany, Brazil etc. very well in the United States too, with a good 4th position and for a French film it is a phenomenal result. So happy for JC, I think he will soon make a deal with Netflix for more movies.

Is it worth a watch? I thought so. I enjoyed myself enough and laughed and smiled at some of the peculiar references and odd jokes. It might fall between two stools for some though. It is never fully an action movie, a farce or a comedy choosing to flit between them all.

What I have noticed is that it has had lukewarm reception in English-speaking countries and enthusiastic reception in France (three days in first position!) and Europe in general. This is good news because the film is produced, directed and financed by France so first of all it has to please the French audience.

This is good news because the film is produced, directed and financed by France so first of all it has to please the French audience. True, even JCVD said in his early days that he was so successful around the world because action is pretty much the same worldwide but comedy is different for each country/culture. Review Hollywood Insider www.hollywoodinsider.com/the-last-mercenary-review/ ‘The Last Mercenary’ knows exactly the kind of film it intends to be and, generally, delivers well on the promise of its premise. The film is a ridiculous, hectic, action-filled ride that audiences grew to love in the 1990s and will no doubt inspire nostalgic feelings as one of Hollywood’s greatest action stars, Jean-Claude Van Damme, graces audiences screens once more.
‘The Last Mercenary’ – The Verdict ‘The Last Mercenary’ is a ridiculous, fun action throwback starring the quintessential action hero, Jean-Claude Van Damme. While having its share of plot conveniences and generic writing in the story and characters, the action, chuckles, and performances shine through to deliver exactly what a silly action flick should. While most likely not landing with the art-house film crowd, I can firmly recommend this film to all those action film fans feeling nostalgic for a taste of the classic action films that populated the 1990s.

There are such french films that win Oscar awards, and when I watch them I think they are utter garbage lol. When you haven't been brought up with something and then you watch it seldom, it's natural that you may not like it. My love for Ice Hockey is probably not the same love Hockey would get in India or another Country. The Last Mercenary, although I found it entertaining enough was one of my least fave Van Damme movies. I am glad so many people enjoyed it though! Like I said, I enjoyed watching it but doubt I would watch it a second time..... Reminded me a bit of an Austin Powers meets Van Damme movie lol.

JC is right, the humor varies from country to country but I think the action of this film is appreciated by everyone.
Fourth day in #1 position in France, what a success!!! In cinematic numbers it would be like a weekend at the box office between 5 and 7 million euros, I think the sequel is safe if it stays in the Top 10 for a couple of weeks.

Watched it. Didn't liked it, way too much forced comedy. The production definitely looks big budget, but yeah overall expected something way better JCVD was great doing all stuff of different undercover looks and being an incredible lead. But I do hope he continue to work with Netflix! Also, would love for Netflix to buy the right and continue JCVJ with more seasons. Similar to what they did with Cobra Kai when they bought it out of YouTube.

Amazon can resurrect the series already tomorrow if they want, they have all the rights and JC said during the premiere that he would agree to shoot a second season. The "Good Omens" series was recently restarted after a couple of years of hiatus, so if they want they can!
