The unfortunate problem now in the world is people want actors to do martial arts movies like Keanu Reeves, Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington (Equalizer) rather than an actual Martial Artist.... Don't get me wrong, Keanu knows his stuff but still you get my point. I don't understand the way the world has gone in this phase with movies. You look at critics reviewing Sudden Death or Double Impact etc... and they are terrible reviews.... Same stuff "Typical Van Damme movie, shoot em up, kill all the bad guys with fancy moves, and it ends.... and it all starts because of a corn storyline." Well what the hell do you call John Wick? ?? THe entire franchise started because his friggin dog was killed, and there is next to no acting in it.... Keanu barely has any lines... It's pretty much brutal violence from the get go right to the end, and yet somehow that franchise gets 90 plus percent from the critics while Pound Of Flesh gets 10 percent. Taken is the same thing, his daughter is taken so he goes after them and gets revenge... That exact same movie could be done with Van Damme and yet it would have gotten 10 percent rather than 90 or whatever the critics gave it. Martial Artists for some reason or another just don't seem to make it to the big screen anymore. The critics much prefer The Rock, Liam Neeson, Keanu Reeves etc to do these type of movies now.

I only watched the first John Wick, didn't think it was worth watching the sequels, but I have to say I'm not a fan of sequels in general. I watched the first two Taken movies, liked the first one, second one not so much.
But the fact that Netflix still wants to make a Van Damme movie is very cool and Amazon did Jean-Claude Van Johnson. I did not mind that they did not make a second season of JCVJ the story got too weird for me, seems like they did not expect to get a second season anyway.

The point is that in the 80s/90s when you wanted to make an action movie you were looking for actors who could perform the action scenes, JC and Seagal got their first roles because of that, Stallone was one of the few action stars of that era to have started as an acting actor. Today the actors are required to be able to act for at least 5 minutes without stopping, they do not care if these actors have mediocre athletic skills, that will be covered by the double. We all loved "The Expendables 2" right? JC performed his 360 kick and everyone loved his charisma but the director didn't care, he would have preferred John Travolta or Nicolas Cage because JCVD was only able to act in "short-cuts" of dialogue...

Agreed with this, I saw John Wick and thought it was ok and the sequel was just meh... Haven't seen the third.... I have seen all the Takens and again they are just ok, but obviously I would take a Van Damme action movie any day of the week over this. I was also watching JCVJ, but only got about half way through because everytime we tried to cast it to the tv it kept skipping and freezing and it was so annoying..... I heard the show got a bit strange however.

Which is totally fair, but Van Damme is a pretty solid actor (obviously better in his original language which is French) and I wouldn't doubt for one minute he could do John Wick.... Of course anyone outside of JCVD fans would look at me and call me crazy in comparing him to Keanu.... and don't get me wrong, I am not comparing the two. I am just saying that the John Wick movies don't have a ton of high quality acting, I don't even think they had Keanu cry when the dog died (it just showed his face look super mad and then cut to the next scene) But you are right, big producers and directors would much rather have a big name actor that can act like Brad Pitt, and then just do the scenes with a stunt double. It's such a shame.... Don't get me wrong, I still like action movies like Die Hard, but when a martial arts movie is called upon, it should be someone who can half decent do their own stunts. Granted, I will give Tom Cruise credit, he certainly does most of if not all his own stunts in the Mission Impossible movies.
