Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, especially known for his action movies, is immortalized in his 'epic' split in bronze. He hangs with legs spread between the pillars of the Hilton Hotel. The men of the Amsterdam advertising bureau Natwerk are somewhat obsessed with the actor from Brussels. "He is a classic eighties hero and his epic split is phenomenal," says Frank Rough (37), creative director of the company. "Enough reason for us to immortalize this idol with a statue."
The 40 centimeter high Van Damme is cast in bronze and stands between two poles at the Oosterdoksstraat under the Hilton Hotel. He is captured in his famous split, as seen in films like Bloodsport and Kickboxer. Volvo also made an advertisement with the split.
Amstel Hotel De Ruwe actually had a different location for Van Damme in mind. "I wanted him placed between the poles of the Amstel Hotel, with its ass towards the guests. We used boats to measure everything, but because the posts are made of wood, it is impossible to make the figurine in the right size. '
Natwerk has no permission from the municipality to place the bronze man. "We have not tried to get permission, because you will never get it of course. I hope that "he remain there for a while." De Ruwe mentions the statue of a man sawing a tree in the Leidsebosje as an example. In 1989, one of the branches of a tree a small man with a saw was placed by an unknown sculptor, and since then he sits there and got some fame. "It would be cool if our statue is given a similar status."
Undercover To avoid suspicion, the men went to place Jean-Claude van Damme undercover. "Dressed in a fluorescent orange vest and a helmet we looked like a bunch of construction workers. Nobody even looked at me."
While the men of Natwerk have the email address of Van Damme have, they haven't informed the actor yet of their tribute to him. "We'll try to reach him through publicity and, who knows," maybe he 'll visit us soon. " (By: Bien Borren)

Sometimes quite large, sometimes very small. Every week a photo with one of his recent works appears in the supplement to the newspaper Het Parool. A great opportunity to take a closer look at his work. Sometimes you have to search to find it and sometimes it is already gone. I thought this little spread-legged little man was long gone as I pass by it daily. Had once looked for it but in the wrong place.
