March 9, 2017
For those who don’t know, Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally cast as the alien in John McTiernan’s 1987 Predator film. Of course, this was before the alien got redesigned by Steve Wang and recast with a much taller Kevin Peter Hall. Don’t believe me? Check it out yourself… See Jean-Claude Van Damme in the original Predator costume!
Makeup FX innovator, Steve Johnson (GHOSTBUSTERS, SPECIES, BLADE 2) shares the inside story on what went wrong with the original Boss Films PREDATOR suit, worn by martial artist and aspiring action star Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Predator is a 1987 American science fiction action horror film directed by John McTiernan. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of an elite special forces team who are on a mission to rescue hostages from guerrilla territory in Central America. Kevin Peter Hall co-stars as the titular antagonist, a technologically advanced form of extraterrestrial life secretly stalking and hunting the group. Predator was written by Jim and John Thomas in 1985, under the working title of Hunter.

www.telegraph.co.uk/films/0/gentle-giant-behind-predator-mask-remembering-7-ft-2-actor-kevin/By Adam White 12 June 2017 • 4:19pm While Hall was reportedly crushed by the show’s cancellation, he quickly found solace in what would become his signature role -- even if it meant slipping behind a prosthetic mask once again. Hall came late to the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi actioner Predator (released 30 years ago this week), arriving on set as a last-minute replacement for none other than Jean-Claude Van Damme, who was initially cast as the film’s villain.
Van Damme had even started filming, until he was dismissed from the set amid production squabbles. For much of the film, the Predator is invisible, glimpsed stalking through the Central American jungle in a blurry shimmer before becoming corporeal during the film’s final act. To achieve the invisibility effect, Van Damme was encased in an enormous red body suit which would be digitally removed later on.
But Van Damme didn’t understand the requirements needed for CGI. Believing the giant fluffy crab outfit he was wearing was what the Predator would actually look like on-screen, he often complained that it was ridiculous.
But explaining the truth to Van Damme, including the fact that the masked Predator would be off-screen for much of the film, only enraged the Muscles from Brussels further, who had hoped the role would be his stepping stone to stardom. Coupled with his vocal frustrations with the temperature of the suit itself, Van Damme infuriated the crew so much that he was ultimately fired. Stepping in at the very last minute was Hall, who made no such complaints about body temperature in the suit.

Predator’ is 30: VFX supe Joel Hynek recalls the days of optical compositing, thermal cameras and *that* red suit
vfxblog: With that red suit too, there’s stories about Jean-Claude Van Damme wearing it in the shape of the original design, and not being very happy about his role. Was there also a red suit made in the shape of the new creature?
Joel Hynek: Yes, it wasn’t super detailed. It had a larger head and it was more human shaped than the original one. We even tried making a red suit for a monkey but the monkey didn’t like that too much. It just ran up into a tree and hid.
So…Jean-Claude Van Damme. He kept wanting to have the alien be essentially a kick boxer because he kept wanting to kick all the time and I’ll never forget being in Joel Silver’s trailer and he wanted to put the word out, he wanted to talk to Van Damme. So Van Damme comes into the trailer and Joel says, ‘Look. You can not keep doing that kick. The Predator is not a kick boxer.’ And Van Damme said, ‘No I have to do that. He must do that.’ Then Joel Silver said, ‘Well forget it then. You’re out of here. Goodbye.’ And Van Damme said, ‘Kiss my balls,’ and stormed out and that was the end of that.

Here’s Why Jean-Claude Van Damme Left the Original Predator Movie By Sean K. Cureton In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, McTiernan opened up about why the seminal action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme didn’t get a seat at the table in the making of the original Predator movie as the eponymous alien monster. According to the acclaimed American filmmaker, Van Damme has his agent to blame for never stepping foot on the set of the 1987 action movie, stating:
“We never shot anything with him. It was a complete screw up with his agent, trying to hustle him into a job and didn’t know what the movie was. It’s silly. It was really silly.“

Guns and (Shea) Butter: An Oral History of 'Predator'
Here's where things start to get weird. Everyone agrees on the general facts that 1) Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally cast as the Predator; 2) He didn't like the red suit, either, and clashed with Silver. But when it comes to why, exactly, he got fired, nearly everyone THR spoke with had a different explanation — including three separate first-person accounts of the actual moment he was fired. What follows is every account THR received of JCVD's brief stay in Puerto Vallarta.
Burch: Jean-Claude Van Damme was someone who used to constantly come into my office, jumping up in the air, showing me his moves, begging me for work. He was nobody. He didn't have any credits. So finally I said to Joel, "He'd be great as the Predator because no one moves like him." I mean he really is quite amazing. He even stored his furniture in my garage! And then (laughs) he wasn't there that long. And I heard he was complaining the whole time and they fired him. And he came back and got his stuff out of my garage. And then then next time I saw him he was getting $5 million a picture. [The "He complained too much" version.]
Baxley: Joel and I were walking down the hallway of the hotel together and Jean-Claude was walking toward us with his assistant. And Jean-Claude walked up and said, "Are you Joel Silver?" And he said yeah. And Jean said, "Well look at this!" And he jumped up in the air, I swear to God, did the splits with his legs straight out and his crotch was at eye level — and I'm 6 feet tall. He was there to play the creature, and a company called Boss had designed a creature. It had the head of an ant. And they spent an absolute fortune on this. And so they brought Jean-Claude out and they put the head on Jean-Claude, and Jean-Claude stood up and freaked out, and took off this $20,000 head and threw it on the ground and it shattered. And Joel said, "What the f— are you doing!" And he told Jean-Claude, "You'll never work in Hollywood again! Get off my set!" So that was it. [The "He broke the creature head" version.]
The red suit for the original Predator design.
Davis: He was the original Predator until we realized the Predator couldn't be 5-foot-6; he actually needed to be of greater stature. [The "He was too short" version. (Worth noting that the man who replaced him in the new suit, Kevin Peter Hall, was over 7 feet tall.)]
Chaves: I remember getting a phone call in my room from Joel because Jean-Claude, him and I hit it off right away, and I thought that he would've been incredible as [the Predator] but he wanted his face to be seen. And I remember [Joel saying], "You go down there and talk to him and convince him that he's the alien and he's gotta get into the suit!" And so I went down and I spent a couple of hours trying to convince him that, you know, he'd be in this costume, "But everybody's gonna know it's you, Jean-Claude, because nobody can move like [you]!" I tried my best to convince him but it didn't work. And then I guess something happened, and he capitulated, Jean-Claude, to get into this suit and give it a try. And when they sent some of the first dailies of Jean-Claude in this original suit, the people at Fox hated it, absolutely hated it, and thought it looked like a rat — and it did! As soon as Joel was told about that news, he let him go. [The "Fox hated the original creature and JCVD was collateral damage" version.]
Duke: They were going to, I think, superimpose all of the special effects on the body in postproduction. But in order to do that, the actor had to wear a felt suit that covered his whole body, and with 90 and 100 degree temperatures, [Jean-Claude] had passed out twice from dehydration. And Joel came over and said, "Jean, I know it's hot, but we're losing time, man. If you pass out one more time, we gotta fire you." So Jean says, "I'm not doing it on purpose!" Joel says, "Man, this is production. Don't take it personally." So two weeks went by, and he's flying on these wires in trees and everything and he passes out, and Joel comes and tells him, "You're fired." [The "He passed out too many times" version.]
Hynek: I was in Joel Silver's trailer, and he had called for Jean-Claude to come see him. And he comes in the trailer and Joel starts saying, "You gotta stop kickboxing!" — because [Jean-Claude] wanted to kickbox — and he was telling him, "Look, the Predator is not a kickboxer." And Van Damme was like (Van Damme voice), "I must do that; that's how I see the Predator." And Joel said, "Well, you're fired. Get out of here." And Van Damme says, "Kiss my balls!" and walks out, and that was the end of that. [The "Creative differences" version.]

wow!! So many versions.. has JCVD ever speak about that case? Yes, he did. Jean-Claude Van Damme www.avclub.com/article/jean-claude-van-damme-2202 By Nathan Rabin Mar 10, 2008 11:04 PM Predator (1987)—"Predator" JCVD: I was in that originally, it was obviously the first one. They did a cast of my body. My feet were in the cast of the alien. My hands were in the forearms, my head was in the neck. I was moving everything with cables. It was a very unsecure, very dangerous type of outfit. It didn't work for nobody. They put air conditioning into my back, because it was very hot in Mexico. So they did another outfit with a bigger guy, taller guy on the inside. So I was hired, then I was cancelled. But that helped for Bloodsport. It's a very funny story, because when I met Menahem Golan from Cannon, he heard about me playing the Predator, and he was very excited to sign me for Bloodsport. That helped me a lot. He didn't know I was an alien. He ain't going to see my face and my body. He thought I was the type of alien with a human face and body, where people would be able to recognize me.

I also remember that JCVD mentioned that he got fired because he refused to jump with the suit and he said it was too dangerous and would get hurt if he did the jump. They fired him and asked someone else of do it and the guy jumped and broke or twisted his ankle or something.
